Medical student
Nova Southeastern University
Roberto Martin, MS2, is a passionate medical student with a strong focus on surgery, currently attending NSU-KPCOM. Throughout his undergraduate and medical school, he shadowed General Surgeon Dr. Miguel Lopez-Viego, gaining invaluable insights into the daily responsibilities of a surgeon. This extensive experience has fueled Roberto's ambition to specialize in surgery. To this end he regularly attends General Surgery lectures and participates in surgical morbidity and mortality conferences as part of his preparation for surgical residency. He also participates in tumor board conferences and breast surgery conferences, where he engages in multidisciplinary discussions on complex cancer cases.
Roberto Martin is deeply involved in both academic and community service initiatives. He serves as a peer mentor for his medical school as well as a SharkPups undergraduate mentor, guiding incoming M1s and pre-medical students through the complexities of pursuing a career in medicine. Additionally, Roberto volunteers with various community outreach programs, including local women's shelters and health fairs, where he helps educate underserved populations on critical health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancer screenings.
In his various leadership roles with campus organizations, Roberto Martin has organized many events reflecting his commitment to serve and give back to his community. This includes things such as creating hygiene kits and coordinating meal distributions for the homeless in Fort Lauderdale and a microaggressions panel geared toward educating students on how to navigate cultural differences in the workplace.
Beyond academics and volunteering, Roberto Martin has a keen interest in medical research, specifically testing novel anti-cancer drugs for efficacy against the deadly glioblastoma. His research reflects his dedication to advancing healthcare solutions.
Driven by a desire to make a lasting impact in the field of medicine, Roberto continues to develop his clinical and research skills while maintaining a strong commitment to giving back to the community.
