Dr. Gerard A. Baltazar DO FACOS FACS is a Trauma & Acute Care Surgeon and an assistant professor of surgery for NYU Langone Health.
He attended Georgetown University where he received the Howard Hughes Medical Research, the John Carroll emerging leader scholarships and a bachelor’s degree in biology and fine art. He obtained an osteopathic medicine degree from Touro University California where he received awards for Community Service & Student Life. After residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, Dr. Baltazar finished a surgical critical care fellowship at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. He served as Director of Surgical Critical Care for a critically underserved Bronx community before matriculating to NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island.
Dr. Baltazar’s interests include osteopathic manipulative treatment for trauma victims & chest wall injury operative reconstruction. Dr. Baltazar has created continuing medical education lecture series and speaks regularly on a range of surgical topics. He is Vice President of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society and an active member of ACOS and SCCM. Dr. Baltazar has received research and leadership awards from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and is an NYU Faculty Scholar.
With a passion for frontline patient care, Dr. Baltazar has assumed several leadership roles, including as Chair of the Department of Surgery Patient Experience Committee, Medical Director for the NYU Comprehensive Transfer Center, Medical Unit Director for the hospital’s largest unit, Wellness Ambassador, & subject matter expert for the Case Review and Escalation Support Team.
Dr. Baltazar is developing a work-life balance through which he can enjoy quality time with his wife, two young daughters. To pay forward his experiences, Dr. Baltazar mentors medical students, residents, and young attendings and supports healthcare missions in the developing world.
